Bill Gates plugs Work Hard. Be Nice.

February 7, 2009

Bill Gates mentioned KIPP and their book “Work Hard. Be Nice.” at Ted* a few days ago. Here’s the video

On the  book reviews of Work Hard. Be Nice. it has been said that the book is “required reading” and “this works.” But, I ask, if so many public schools are doing it wrong, why hasn’t it been corrected yet? Is it time, money, politics, teacher’s unions… what?

As a side note, I think the best point made by Bill Gates is that getting a masters degree in education doesn’t correlate to the performance of a teacher. Instead, it’s highly correlated to past performance.

* For those who don’t know, Ted is conference where prominent educators, entrepreneurs, musicians, artists and other inspirational people give talks. We are fortunate that Ted posts videos of the lectures online for us all.
